    Lenka Krsová

I am a social media data analyst & digital humanities researcher.

I look into how social networks form human

relationships and allow the spreading of information.

I also dive into how datafication and algorithms

shape us in our communication and media consumption.

My main areas of interest

among many others

Social networks & information flow & trust

I focus on social networks and how their inner structures allow the spreading of information. I am interested in the role of different types of nodes in the networks, how they attain their un/trustworthy position over time and what it means for information to pass through these gates to get noticed.

Datafication & privacy

Due to the ubiquitous datafication of human online presence data privacy and ethics related to this type of semi-public data is of high importance to me. I focus on social media data and how algorithms of different social media platforms influence people in media consumption. I am also interested in users view on the privacy of their data.

News & misinformation spreading

Coming originally from journalist background I always stay in touch with media and journalism, specifically the Czech one. I explore possibilities of digital journalism and the usage of social media among journalists. The current focus of my news world related research are misinformation news and examining of narratives they produce and spread both online and offline.

Mental health issues & being online

Working and being online and at the same time be able to take care of good mental health is not an easy task. I know it first hand. Therefore I encourage a healthy lifestyle focused on work-life balance and being offline regularly. I am very vocal regarding these issues and support numerous initiatives that provide help in this matter. #nevypustdusi #bornthiswayfoundation

Girls & Women in IT Empowerment

I do remember times when I started my career in IT and everything was so overwhelming. I also remember how difficult it was to be heard among the all-men company and how difficult and tiring it sometimes still is. As much as I can, I support girls and women pursuing their careers in IT. #womeninIT #womenintech #bejuststrong

My story

My name is Lenka (Leni in short), a proud Czech, born and raised in a small town of Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic. Since my childhood, I always wanted to understand things and how they worked. Well, no surprise that I ended up working with data and become a huge fan of technology in general.

My professional career in online media started with my first real job of social media editor in Czech TV, a public broadcaster in the Czech Republic. Since then I started educating myself on daily basis in the field of online media and digital marketing. Though the news is always a big passion for me and marketing was a great way to get to know online communities and consumer behavior, during my another job as a data analyst in Socialbakers, I finally found "my thing". Data.

At the beginning of 2018, I defended my Master's thesis about Czech journalists on Twitter and therefore finished my university studies (at least for now...). Currently, I am preparing myself for a possible Ph.D. path in the near future.

Thanks to my coding passion and problem solving & data-oriented approach to everything I now fully focus on the analysis of data on social media, news and online communities in general. I give lectures, write blog posts and occasionally share what I know in media.

For most of my work, I use R and I enjoy every single stage of this love-hate relationship through lessons I take on DataCamp and through the support of a wonderful community around R Studio. Also, Gephi and Open Refine are tools I work with on a daily basis.

---

I enjoy reading books greatly, watching Swedish and sci-fi movies, and spending my free time with my dog. I usually spend too much time on Twitter, not enough time traveling (mainly through Scandinavia and USA). But mostly I'm just a happy being staying the most curious person in the room.
